Join Susquehanna Service Dogs for the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community

Multimedia with summary

These eleven service dogs in training are ready to walk! Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD) is one of 48 organizations participating in the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community on May 20 at HACC in Harrisburg, PA. Thanks to Highmark Blue Shield, which underwrites the cost of the walk, all the money raised by SSD’s walkers comes directly to SSD.

This is Susquehanna Service Dogs’ biggest fundraiser. There’s still time to donate or join the walk to support SSD to raise, train, and place service dogs.

Service Dogs Provide New Freedoms, Responsibilities, Dreams

"How can I not raise a service dog?"
Multimedia with summary

Susquehanna Service Dogs puppy raiser Meghan Miller is often asked how she can give up a dog after raising it for 18 months. She and her husband gave up their first service dog, SSD London, in October 2014. Since then, she has seen how London has given his partner new independence, new responsibilities, and new dreams.

Meghan and her husband are currently raising two more dogs to become service dogs. Now when people ask how she can give the dogs up, she says, "How can I not?"

How?

It's the number one question I am asked as a puppy raiser for SSD. How long do you raise them? How much do they pay you? How can I get involved? And both my most frequently asked and the most heart wrenching: How can you give them up?
