Are Healthcare Flexibles the Next Big Plastic Recycling Feedstock?

The Results Are In...
Blog

Flexible plastic packaging (plastic bags, stretch and shrink film, sterilization wrap, medical device packaging, and so on) represents a significant percentage of the healthcare waste stream, yet is rarely recycled. Due to their lack of standard composition and the potential for mixed resins across different layers, utilizing these materials presents numerous challenges for recyclers. Flexibles are also easily confused visually with other materials, making manual on-site sorting challenging for hospital staff.

Why Recyclers Should Consider Healthcare Plastics as a Valuable Feedstock

Blog

Healthcare facilities in the U.S. generate about 14,000 tons of waste per day. 25% of it is plastic packaging and products, and— 85% of this plastic waste is non-infectious (meaning it never comes into contact with a patient)! How can recyclers take advantage of this clean plastics waste stream and create value with it?

HPRC has made a Healthcare Plastics: Guidance for Recyclers just for this purpose. Learn more about it and download a copy right here.

Healthcare Plastics Guide for Recyclers

Blog

About 1 million tons of clean, non-infectious healthcare plastics are generated in U.S. healthcare facilities each year. While the potential of this largely untapped waste stream is obvious, how to access this waste stream can be less clear.

The Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council (HPRC) has prepared comprehensive guidance to help inform and educate plastics recyclers and processors about the common streams of plastic waste generated in clinical settings. Read about this guide and download a copy here.
