Knowledge is Power: Empowering Women & Building Communities on International Women's Day

Multimedia with summary

This International Women's Day, we're inspired by a dairy farmer named Savita, who lives in western India.

Her family’s dairy farm provides both nutrition for her family and a source of income. Like most local dairy farmers, Savita has had little training on farming techniques and business practices before entering the marketplace. As a result, their cows often produce low-quality milk – and not much of it – which in turn leads to low income. Farmers like Savita tend to live from one milk collection to the next, rarely able to get ahead or invest in their futures.

Living Future unConference Celebrates the Genius and Courage of Women on International Women's Day and Everyday

As we reflect on March 8--International Women’s Day--I am recollecting the sea of 100,000 participants at the Women’s March in Portland, OR this last January. It was deeply gratifying to be surrounded by a strong, courageous and passionate group of women. The thought that nearly 4 million participants worldwide were moved to turn out to the Women’s March based on one individual woman in Hawaii from her Facebook post strains the imagination. The Black Lives Matter movement also started as one woman’s tweet that led to a social movement.

As a new college graduate, my first job was to speak at high schools across the U.S. to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. As part of this program, called “Previews of Progress,” I demonstrated “new” technologies in areas like lasers, turbine engines and hydraulics to get students excited about the possibilities.

For over 100 years, International Women’s Day has been a reminder to recognize women’s contributions to the American workforce and economy. Women in the workplace have come a long way, but there is still a long way to go before women are treated equally to men when it comes to financial compensation and social acknowledgment at work. For example, men still receive more recognition at work for their successes than women according to a recent survey by Bamboo HR.
