Almost every company’s website has a section called “Our Values.” Many have a section titled “Our Mission,” sometimes related to the values commentary, and sometimes a standalone section. These statements usually spell out a business’s commitment to its employees and community, to its standards in its practices, and to its general reason for being,usually in fairly generic terms. Occasionally, there are specific references to causes with which the company is engaged, usually local or national charities or non-profit partner organizations.

That’s me in the photo above, engaging with an interactive, virtual reality (VR) installation on the “Check Your Blind Spots” unconscious bias training tour bus. In this VR experience, I’m invited into an encounter between two young black men, a suspicious elderly white neighbor, and a white policeman. The point is to immerse the viewer into an all-too-common situation that is loaded with potential for misunderstanding and conflict (fortunately, nothing violent took place in this instance).

Diversity and inclusion is the formal term of choice for issues that are racially, ethnically, and gender-related in today’s society. That legal-sounding label includes some of the most emotionally loaded issues in our culture, issues that have deep roots with complicated pasts in American history. Buoyed by cultural movements such as Black Lives Matter and #MeToo, issues of discrimination, unconscious bias, pay inequality, glass ceilings, immigration, LGBTQ rights, and outright harassment regularly make headline news.

Employee Activism Movement Started by Google Employees

When I began this newsletter exactly one year ago, the inspiration came from the increasing CEO activism I saw taking place throughout the business community. I had been reporting for 3BL Media on this movement since its beginnings, in 2014, when Apple’s Tim Cook and Starbucks’ Howard Schultz spoke out on gay rights and race, respectively. From their positions at the top of highly profitable companies with large, loyal consumer bases, I thought their statements bold and welcome, although privileged and perhaps unique.
