Plastic drinking straws, I realized recently, are enmeshed with many of my fondest memories. When I was a child, a glass of lemonade with a straw was heaven. Drinking straws were also part of going to the movies, huddled in the dark with a giant, icy Diet Coke. In my 20s, I remember the thrill of sipping whiskey sours through one of those short, slender cocktail straws and feeling carefree and sophisticated.

Bacardi came out to support the “Miami Is Not Plastic” launch event, an initiative to inspire hospitality businesses in the Miami area to reduce single-use disposable plastics in an effort to help keep our oceans clean. Local politicians, hospitality leaders, eco-friendly vendors, charitable organizations, and about 300 guests – including many Bacardi employees and business partners - came out to show their support.

Numerous campaigns have sprung up to get people to forgo drinking straws — or at least to use less environmentally damaging alternatives. Some restaurants have stopped automatically putting them in drinks, and others are using compostable straws, but most still offer plastic. International spirits company Bacardi has joined with the Surfrider Foundation for a "no-straw movement" as part of its Good Spirited: Building a Sustainable Future program.

You may have seen a few campaigns on social media recently about major corporations like Bacardi pledging to eliminate straws from all company functions as well as campaigns from numerous groups like #stopsucking. The initiatives behind these campaigns are to get people to eliminate the use of straws in their daily routine.  Why?
