Recognizing student athletes who are making a difference
Gildan recognized six young student-athletes during the annual Foundation of Athletes for Excellence in Quebec (FAEQ) gala on November 29. The outstanding student athletes achieved strong athletic performance and outstanding academic results while demonstrating strong leadership in their communities. This year, the Gildan Leadership Category bursaries totalling $12,000 were presented to university students to support their continued academic and athletic endeavours.
Education and screening program for the prevention of breast cancer
Gildan’s annual “Pink Tour” in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness held during the month of October is an initiative aimed at raising awareness of breast cancer at Gildan’s facilities in Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean Basin.
The Pink Tour fosters a culture of prevention and inspires breast cancer advocacy, honoring those affected by the disease. Resident Gildan doctors toured the facilities to lead presentations on the importance of prevention through early detection and intervention.
Starting in the fall of 2018, Gildan launches its “Young Sustainability Leaders” program to inspire and empower students to be the next generation of social and environmental entrepreneurs. Gildan is proud to support organizations that are promoting the knowledge, tools and motivation to spark the powerful impact youth can have in creating a better future.
Gildan partners with the Batey Relief Alliance (BRA) and the Canadian Embassy to support entrepreneurship and women empowerment initiatives
Gildan has launched a new initiative in the Dominican Republic entitled "La Comunidad Emprende"(The Community Startup). Co -funded by the Canadian Embassy and in partnership with the Batey Relief Alliance, the program aims to empower women and young people, providing training, guidance and the encouragement to pursue their own business.
Interview with Melissa Rodriguez on her experience with POP's school building initiative
In 2017, American Apparel launched a capsule collection of hoodies, t-shirts and bags in collaboration with Pencils of Promise (POP) to provide support for teachers and fund the construction of new schools in Guatemala, Ghana and Laos, contributing U.S. $220,000. POP is a US-based not-for-profit organization that works to increase access to education and raise global awareness of child illiteracy as there are 250 million children worldwide who lack basic reading, writing and math skills.
Gildan was once again a recipient of the Corporate Social Responsibility Seal awarded by the Foundation for Corporate Social Responsibility in Honduras (FUNDAHRSE). Gildan, the largest apparel manufacturer in the region, scored 100% in categories such as human rights, labor practices, environment and community engagement, against a manufacturing industry average of 95%.
