A Culture of Belonging That Drives Innovation

How inclusion, diversity, and equity at Medtronic fuel new thinking, more creativity, and better decision-making.

A company's success is determined by its people. Creating a culture where everyone feels welcome is a start, but our goal — a true sense of belonging — is much more profound. When our people feel like they are accepted, safe, and valued, they contribute more fully and with more heart in the game. Innovation comes from free sharing and ideating over new approaches and different perspectives. At Medtronic, our culture of belonging empowers employees to bring their full selves and ideas to the table.

Putting People First in Healthcare

Some of the top innovators at Medtronic recently held a virtual forum to discuss ways to accelerate the principles of human-centered design

As an emergency room physician in Philadelphia, Dr. Bon Ku sees firsthand how poorly designed hospitals fail both patients and clinicians.

From cramped and chaotic emergency rooms to medical devices that come with operating manuals the size of a phone book, our current healthcare system needs to be reimagined, Ku says.

“Healthcare is not designed for humans,” Ku says. “It’s not designed for clinicians. It’s not designed for patients. And that’s a problem.

Bridging Disparities in Healthcare

Dismantling global disparities in healthcare and creating lasting solutions

It is 1992 in Mexico City, and Dr. Luis Molina is struggling to help his cardiovascular patients. Thirty percent of his neighbors lack money to pay for basic needs, and with other socioeconomic factors at play, some patients are left on a seemingly endless pacemaker waitlist. When a Medtronic representative heard Dr. Molina’s story, a product donation and medical training opportunity blossomed into a 25-plus year program that has served more than 3,000 patients.
