Walmart Foundation donates $12 million to Feeding America; Walmart stores, Sam’s Clubs and distribution centers allocate funds and product to hunger-relief organizations

Food insecurity continues to plague families and individuals across the country with an estimated 1 in 6 people at risk of hunger as a result of COVID-19. This is compared to a pre-pandemic number of 1 in 9 struggling with food insecurity, according to Feeding America®, the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization.

BENTONVILLE, Ark., November 23, 2020 /3BL Media/ — On Thursday, November 19, Walmart and America’s largest and top-ranked historically Black university, North Carolina A&T State University, announced plans to launch the Equity in Education Initiative, a new program aimed at increasing the number of African American college graduates securing careers in fields critical to the nation’s workforce. The program will support undergraduate students with tailored resources and assistance as they pursue degrees in business, engineering and other professional disciplines.

The problem of food insecurity is not new. Yet amid the coronavirus pandemic, it’s taken on new urgency, as job loss and school closures disrupt the rhythms of life – and have often left America’s children unsure of where their next meal is coming from.
The Walmart Foundation recently announced it will award two grants totaling $4.5 million to the NGOs Tanager and Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN) in order to improve the livelihoods of Indian farmers. These grants are a part of a $25 million commitment the foundation made in September 2018 to support smallholder Indian farmers over the course of five years.
