Beef is a significant part of our restaurants’ menus, making up 13 percent of Darden’s supply chain. Over the past year, Darden has supported efforts among cattlemen and cattlewomen to “make continuous improvements in the sustainability of the global beef production process.” One of those efforts has been in Florida in partnership with the Audubon Society. Through support from the Darden Foundation, Audubon is enabling ranchers to adopt best management practices by storing water on their ranchlands.
In the coming weeks we’ll be featuring some of the initiatives and products highlighted in the Huntsman 2012 Sustainability Report. Our approach to sustainability reaches beyond our organization and our efforts impact many lives and places. We titled our 2012 sustainability report “Conversations About Sustainability” to reflect our commitment to meaningful stakeholder engagement. We believe that sustainability, like a good conversation, evolves to meet the needs and concerns of all involved.
Danny Raymond says his love for fishing and the outdoors started in the womb. He’s sure he was born with a rod and reel in his hand. Raymond, a log truck driver for Weyerhaeuser’s Western Timberlands business, and his wife Karen, who provides administrative support at the Eugene, Ore., office, share a passion for advocating and educating their community on the conservation of fishery resources.
Conservationists must find common ground with farmers, if they are to achieve their goals of stemming biodiversity loss, says Braulio Dias, the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
“In the past we have given most of our attention to the traditional conservation strategy of protected areas. But that won’t work on its own. More and more, we at the Convention are highlighting biodiversity as part of the solution to agricultural problems, rather than an impediment to economic development.”
