Poop to Plastic and Other Bio-degradable Plastics

Blog

Coca-cola recently stocked shelves with their 'PlantBottle', hailed as the first 100% recyclable plant-based bottle which is a 70/30 mix of traditional plastics and bio-based plastics. While these new bottles can be recycled without gumming up recycling equipment, the down side is they aren't biodegradable. Plastic Resin Recycling Codes - Chasing Arrows or Chasing our Tails?

What do you think? Should the Plastic Recycling #s Be Redesigned?
Blog

I have heard a great deal of grumbling lately about the chasing arrows and the plastic resin numbering system. Today I noticed a blog post (full post written by Debra Atlas at Envirothink is below with a link to her original post). I wanted to solicit feedback from my colleagues who are focused on plastic recycling, as well as CSR and Sustainability leaders since pretty much all companies and supply chains have plastic as a byproduct or in packaging. You know the issues and opportunities related to plastics recycling better than anyone. What do YOU think?

Trash is a 20th Century Gold Mine

Blog

Last night, I had the chance to watch “Trash Inc: The Secret Life of Garbage” on one of my favorite channels, CNBC.

And although we have been very successful in creating the RecycleMatch marketplace over the past year, it was validating to see the focus on trash and how it can be used as a resource. Here are my favorite quotes from the show last night:

  • Garbage is being reborn in ways you can’t imagine

  • Where some see a problem, others see dollar signs

Poop to Plastic? How what's in your dumpster is suddenly a resource.

Summary:

If you missed PopTech this year, you may not have heard. But waste is now a resource. If PopTech Fellow Ryan Smith can turn sewage sludge into plastic, Brooke Farrell (RecycleMatch Co-founder and PopTech Fellow) is pretty sure she can handle what's in your company's dumpster. RecycleMatch is creating markets for all kinds of things we once considered trash. Dubbed the eBay of Trash, RecycleMatch is connecting those who have waste with those who need it. Opening markets, lowering costs, and accelerating green innovation.
