Michael Weiner Scholarship Recipient Spotlight: Sarah David Heydemann

The Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies is keeping the late Player Association executive director’s legacy alive through people like recipient Sarah David Heydemann and the work they will continue to do on behalf of union workers.

“From what I’ve learned about him, it seems like Michael had a deep care and commitment to building community while doing the work. I hope to be the same kind of advocate – one who pays attention not only to the fight at hand but to more intentional, lasting community building,” Heydemann said recently.

Giancarlo Stanton received his 2014 Players Choice Award as the NL’s Outstanding Player before the Marlins’ home opener.

But the big winners will be the children in Africa who benefit from a community center and sports complex that is being funded in part by a Players Trust grant in Stanton’s name that goes along with the award.

Stanton was leading the league in home runs (37), RBIs (105) and slugging (.555) when he was hit in the face by a pitch on Sept.  11, ending his season prematurely. But his peers in the NL had already cast their ballots by then.

Between homework, sports, club activities, part-time jobs and other after-school obligations, high school is a busy time in a young person’s life. So it’s not surprising that students take their free time very seriously.

Yet, every year thousands of these busy teens dedicate a portion of that valuable free time to give back to their communities under a nationwide program established in partnership by Major League baseball players and Volunteers of America. These students make up the Action Team.

Action Team Blog Series: How the Action Team Experience has Shaped my future Goals

I am currently a senior at my school and have been an active member of the Action Team since freshman year. My role as a captain is to plan and organize community service events for students and we do so almost every weekend.
Our school’s efforts include feeding the homeless, working at a food bank and distributing groceries to elderly low-income senior citizens. I also encourage other members of my community to become involved in serving those in need.
