PT Freeport Indonesia, a Freeport-McMoRan Company, Grants Scholarships to Papua High Achievers


PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), in collaboration with the American Indonesian Exchange Foundation (AMINEF), is continuing a Community College Initiative scholarship program for students of Papua and West Papua. To date, PTFI and AMINEF have awarded scholarships to dozens of young women and men from Papua and West Papua to study at a number of universities in the United States.

PT Freeport Indonesia, a Freeport-McMoRan Company, Invests in Fishery Program to Empower Local Communities

August 18, 2017 /3BL Media/ -- PT Freeport Indonesia’s fishery program, in partnership with local governments and community leaders, supports Kamoro businesses near its area of operations in the Mimika Regency in the Papua Province.

The program includes technical training, small business loans, and the provision of refrigeration, storage, and transportation. The program reaches 38 villages on the Mimika coast and 7 village centers for buying and selling fish catches.

Dr. Dwi Listyo Rahayu is the author of numerous scientific papers on marine hermit crabs and mangrove brachyuran crabs. She is a taxonomer at Research Center for Oceanography - Indonesian Institute of Sciences, and has studied decapod crustaceans for over 25 years. She conducts research in the mangrove forests of Indonesia. She has worked in Papua since 1999, funded by PT Freeport Indonesia as part of their commitment to environmental management and monitoring.

The airstrip and passenger terminal will ultimately be handed over to the Mimika Regency government for community use and access.

PT Freeport Indonesia, in coordination with the local government and the Catholic Church have been creating coconut plantations in the coastal villages of Mimika in Papua, Indonesia.

The program started in 2015 and was expanded in 2016 to increase acreage to 100 hectares of land in five coastal villages where 13,000 trees have been planted. This is a part of a comprehensive sustainable economic development initiative for the Mimika Regency in Papua.

The book is entitled Amua-gaig-e: The ethnobotany of the Amungme of Papua, Indonesia, and was written by Carolyn Cook with Joanna Webster.

This non-traditional ethnobotanical guide presents anthropologist Dr. Carolyn Cook’s research and recollections gathered over 30 years of working and living with the Amungme people, who live in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia.
