Our dependence on coal, oil and gas contributes to global warming, the physical destruction of communities and pollution-related health issues which impact all of us – and disproportionately affect low-income people and communities of color. It’s not sustainable. And it’s fundamentally unjust.

Reviving tourism and agriculture is critical for the island’s economic recovery following last year’s hurricane
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, September 20, 2018 /3BL Media/ -- One year after deadly Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, the global organization Mercy Corps is helping the island’s small businesses, farmers and fishermen get back on their feet.
In the wake of Hurricane Maria, which hit Puerto Rico in September 2017 and left a majority of the island without power, homes and roads destroyed, and water contaminated, Northern Trust’s Latin Heritage Leadership Council (LHLC) partnered with other Chicago-area firms to provide help.
Led by the LHLC, employees collected supplies such as dry and canned foods, baby formula, diapers, first-aid kits, towels and blankets, laundry detergent and pet food. They also raised money and purchased nearly 14,000 bottles of water to send to the island.
With the 2018 hurricane season underway, Bechtel and IBM have partnered up to share lessons learned from last year’s devastating Category 5 storm in Puerto Rico and mapping their work to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The two corporations’ commitment to improving long-term recovery from natural disasters led to the Disaster Resiliency Webinar, hosted by 3BL Media.
Even before Hurricane Maria touched down in Puerto Rico in September 2017, many feared the damage would be enormous. When the storm reached landfall, those fears were confirmed, and it was obvious that people’s lives on the island would be changed forever.
2017 was one of the costliest years for natural disasters in U.S. history. From flooding to wildfires, hurricanes and tornadoes, the need for assistance across the country was greater than ever. Hallmark and its businesses supported several disaster response efforts, contributing nearly $150,000 through corporate and employee gifts as well as contributions collected in Hallmark Gold Crown stores.
