The 2018 hurricane season – which kicked off June 1 – is expected to be “near-or above-normal,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. As those who have been in a hurricane will tell you, nobody affected by Harvey or Irma or any other event will look at an approaching storm without profound anxiety.

When Southern California Edison asked David Elias to return to Puerto Rico for a second time this year to help restore power on the island, he had his doubts. There were family obligations. There was also the communications course he would have to drop at Copper Mountain College in Joshua Tree.

“I had all these reasons,” said Elias, an SCE supervisor in the Yucca/Twentynine Palms area, but his wife, Ali, changed his mind.

These Watermark-sponsored projects reached a total of 5,000 people across communities in India, Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines and Puerto Rico, including the nearly 1,000 children who attend the participating schools. Twenty-four Xylem volunteers assisted in the construction of the community-based water systems in India, the Philippines and Puerto Rico. These AquaTowers will bring clean water to the world's most disadvantaged communities.

When the hours after Hurricane Maria turned to days, Virgen Colon of Juncos, Puerto Rico, grew increasingly frightened.

Without power in her flooded house, she needed electricity to operate the air conditioning and fans which kept her son Jan cool. He is 23, born with severe birth defects that have left him bed-bound his entire life.

He also needs oxygen and feeding tubes, and the various medical devices that help him breathe and survive required power to operate.

Finally, desperate, she called the mayor of Juncos. He solved her problem with one call to Medtronic.
