The optical sorters at Republic’s recycling plant in St. Louis can process approximately 30 tons per hour and were experienced first-hand by students of Sacred Heart in Valley Park, Missouri, who are working on the First Lego League Robotics project to improve trash and recycling processes.
This season marks the third year in which the Buffalo Bills have partnered with Republic Services to involve fans in increasing recycling participation and helping to keep Ralph Wilson Stadium clean and beautiful for future generations.
“When the Bills made the efforts to improve the safety, atmosphere and the look of the parking lots, the fans responded by doing their part to maintain the safety and cleanliness of their tailgate area,” said Andy Major, Bills vice president of operations and guest services.
The Blueberry Festival is one of the oldest festivals in Indiana and typically draws 600,000 people every year over the Labor Day Weekend. Republic Services of Culver, Indiana has provided recycling and waste collection services for the community for many years and is a proud supporter of the Blueberry Festival. Republic provided their services during the festival, including supplying front load packers and roll-offs for collecting the festival recycling and trash. On average, approximately five tons of recycling if collected over the holiday weekend.
On August 27, members of the Republic Services team gathered on stage with the Snohomish County Council, Executive, Klickitat County Commissioner and the publisher of the Everett Daily Herald to kick off opening day at the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe, WA. As part of the festivities, Republic presented teachers and students of Highland Elementary with an award for achieving an excellent record in recycling. The theme of the day was community partnership on behalf of a greener tomorrow, something students demonstrated with tips to become better stewards of the environment.
Many fleets were honored but only six took the top honors of the HDT Efficiency and Sustainability awards at the 2015 Fleet Technology Expo at an Aug. 26 ceremony.
Scott Ruder from Con-way Freight, Kirk Welch from Toyota, and Tim Harris from Celadon Trucking Services were given awards for HDT Efficiency. Steve Saltzgiver from Republic Services, Stephen Silverman from Raven Transport, and Scott Perry from Ryder System received the awards for HDT Sustainability.
Local organization Vet Your Pet was chosen by the community to receive the first Republic Rewards Community Grant.
"This is a program we are rolling out nationwide," said Doug McFarland, general manager of Republic Services for Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri. "Mt. Vernon was one of four pilot spots for the Republic Rewards grant program."
Republic Services partnered with the University of Nevada Las Vegas for the first annual Recyclathon, a campus wide initiative and contest encouraging faculty and staff from each college and the student body to recycle each semester. Recyclathon was established to celebrate and honor the 20 anniversary of the on-campus Rebel Recycling Program. As of 2015 the University, in collaboration with Republic Services, collects more than three tons of material every day on UNLV’s main campus, its residence halls, athletics facilities and satellite campuses.
To many, it’s just an empty soda or beer can that needs to be thrown away or a dirty paper plate from taco night. Sometimes it’s just a bunch of empty boxes from the big move or old newspapers someone forgot to read. To many people in the Canyon County area, these items are just junk taking up space and needing to be thrown away. But to anyone working in the recycling centers in Nampa, Caldwell and Boise, that junk is a valuable resource.
