Thanks to generous donations from Safeway and Albertsons customers, funds will help eradicate childhood hunger through a program supported by award-winning actress and Hunger Is Ambassador Viola Davis
PLEASANTON, Calif., and LOS ANGELES, June 10, 2015 /3BL Media/ - The Safeway Foundation and the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) announced they have raised more than $5.5 million through customer donations to Hunger Is, a joint charitable initiative designed to raise awareness and funds to end childhood hunger in America. Now in its second year, the campaign raised funds throughout April 2015 in a month-long, in-store fundraiser in more than 1,600 Safeway and Albertsons stores across the U.S.
The Safeway Foundation donated $100,000 to the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) during a presentation at their Oak Harbor, Wash., store grand opening on Friday, May 22.
The Safeway Foundation had said it wanted to make a surprise donation to a local military organization during the grand opening that would benefit the service men and women at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and other veterans. It also noted that it would be a way to honor the people of Oak Harbor and highlight the deep military ties within the community.

Tuna is the second most popular seafood in the United States, yet for most Americans, it’s a non-descript protein puck that inevitably gets mixed with mayonnaise and celery. Maybe the tuna in that can came from the Philippines, or Micronesia? Perhaps it was caught by a Japanese vessel and transferred to a processing plant in Thailand before making its way to your local supermarket. Maybe it was hooked on a longline or scooped up in a purse seine? Who knows?
Albertsons Safeway believes that food waste can be significantly reduced through collaborative partnerships. As part of our commitment to address the issue, we recently joined the EPA Food Recovery Challenge and the US Food Waste Challenge, both of which encourage participants to increase diversion of food waste away from landfills to better uses, such as composting, feeding livestock and feeding hungry people.
