Tuna is the second most popular seafood in the United States, yet for most Americans, it’s a non-descript protein puck that inevitably gets mixed with mayonnaise and celery. Maybe the tuna in that can came from the Philippines, or Micronesia? Perhaps it was caught by a Japanese vessel and transferred to a processing plant in Thailand before making its way to your local supermarket. Maybe it was hooked on a longline or scooped up in a purse seine? Who knows?
Albertsons Safeway believes that food waste can be significantly reduced through collaborative partnerships. As part of our commitment to address the issue, we recently joined the EPA Food Recovery Challenge and the US Food Waste Challenge, both of which encourage participants to increase diversion of food waste away from landfills to better uses, such as composting, feeding livestock and feeding hungry people.

Making a difference — we need your support to help even more people than last year
Every year, Safeway promotes the spirit of giving to help make the holidays brighter for people who rely on the assistance of food banks. In 2013, our Help Us End Hunger food drive led to the donation of over 630,000 bags of food to local food banks. This year, we want to exceed that number to increase our impact in our communities — but we need your help!
Once again, Safeway is joining forces with our shoppers, local food banks, broadcast partners and Kraft Foods in the Help Us End Hunger food drive. Food donations will be collected through December 25 at most of our stores.
Safeway surpassed our goal to source 1 million pounds of responsibly produced palm oil in 2014 by sourcing over 2.6 million pounds of responsible palm oil as of October 1st. We also set a new goal for 2015.
The oil squeezed out of oil palm fruit is used in many different products and it comes from oil palm plantations based in tropical countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Nigeria. Some palm oil production has been linked to deforestation, wetland destruction and human rights violations, such as child labor and human trafficking.
