Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE: HRL) announced today it is tackling school lunch debt at several schools in its plant communities this holiday season through a special one-time gift.
The company is contributing over $28,000 to help the schools and families in six of its plant communities, with plans to help its other plant communities in the future. In the majority of these schools, the donation will erase all school lunch debt.

Every school day when the end-of-lunch bell rings and students return to class, a little something often gets left behind: the remains of their lunch. Maybe their tray was over-filled, maybe they weren’t hungry yet for lunch, maybe they didn’t have enough time to finish everything. Some of what’s left on their tray might be inedible scraps, like a banana peel, but likely some portion of it is still edible food. Whatever the reason, this food ends up in the trash – to the tune of as much as 530,000 tons each school year in the U.S. alone.
As part of its Gro More Good commitment to connect 10 million children to the benefits of gardens by 2023, The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation is encouraging schools and not-for-profit organizations across the country to apply for funding to support their youth garden programs.

In 2017, American Apparel launched a capsule collection of hoodies, t-shirts and bags in collaboration with Pencils of Promise (POP) to provide support for teachers and fund the construction of new schools in Guatemala, Ghana and Laos, contributing U.S. $220,000.
