Employees assemble and distribute storm kits to 4,000 seniors
Duke Energy recently joined with local community groups to assemble and distribute storm preparedness kits to about 4,000 seniors, some of Florida’s most vulnerable residents. The program expanded across the state after a 2018 pilot in Pinellas County that reached 1,000 homebound seniors in the Meals on Wheels program.
This week on the news, I saw Congress grill social media executives. I heard about the spread of fake news and the negative things that social media has wrought. There was lots of focus on young people and how they use these forums – I even heard one report when an expert being interviewed mentioned that he was an undergraduate.
I won’t disagree that there are negatives about social media, but I do want to point out a different perspective that comes from my work.

United Way and Northern Trust volunteers host a Bingo game for residents of the South Chicago YMCA's Senior Housing. Volunteers should host a game for about 20-30 residents, and bring prizes and snacks. Prizes can include: large-print crossword or sudoku puzzle books, lotions or toiletry items, water bottles, magnets, etc. Snacks are low-sugar or sugar-free.
For this project, volunteers will sort and organize food in the warehouse and package individual food boxes for distribution to the Senior Citizens Supplemental Nutrition Program, which provides food to low-income seniors.
It was an evening for reminiscing, when Major Leaguer Wesley Wright was reunited with New Hope Academy Action Team Captains on the final Conference Call of the 2014 calendar year.
On December 12, just days before the conference call, Wesley joined teens and adults coordinators from Prattville, Alabama’s New Hope Academy, one of the newest Action Teams, during a holiday senior luncheon and dance party for residents at the nearby Gillespie Senior Center.
More than 9 million Americans over the age of 60 face the threat of hunger.
