We at AT&T are continually inspired by the next generation of digital storytellers – the teachers and students who are using the power of technology to create engaging, innovative and compelling classroom projects.
Over the last 6 weeks, we’ve watched as teachers and students from across the country – 46 states to be exact – submitted their projects to the AT&T Digital Storytelling Challenge Presented by DonorsChoose.org.
Scott came into the foster care system when he was six years old and remained in foster care for 10 years. During that time he had seven placements and fell behind in school. His Wendy's Wonderful Kids recruiter saw his potential and his special story and knew she could find the right family. Through diligent research, she was able to find Scott's older sister who was living with her foster family as an adult. After approaching this family, they were more than happy to meet Scott and realized that he was the missing piece to make their family complete.
John had a very interesting story in foster care. He was in seven placements and had no behavior issues of his own, but his three siblings needed specific care to work through their trauma. Due to these needs, several placements disrupted, or broke down. Wendy's Wonderful Kids recruiters do their best to keep sibling groups together, but sometimes the best thing for the child on their caseload is to be removed from the sibling group. In John's case, that was recommended. Once John was placed with a family on his own, we saw him thrive.
Samantha had been in foster care for eight years and during that time was separated from her brother. It was a traumatic experience made worse when a pre-adoptive home broke down, but little did Samantha know there was a ray of sunshine around the corner. After speaking with her Wendy's Wonderful Kids recruiter, Samantha revealed that she really liked her best friend's family and that she had grown close with them. It took some time and a structured plan, but Samantha was adopted by her best friend's family and now her best friend is her sister.
Earlier this month we announced that we reached an exciting milestone: AT&T employees have provided 1 million hours of mentoring to more than 160,000 students who need it the most through our Aspire Mentoring Academy.
