Domtar’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions are Less than Half the Average Producer in Asia

Total direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions from purchased energy at our pulp and paper mills have been reduced by 15 percent since 2010, meeting our 2020 target ahead of schedule.  These reductions have primarily been realized by: fuel switching from coal to less carbon-intensive natural gas, increasing on-site cogeneration of electricity and reducing pulp and paper production in alignment with market demand.

Our progress in diverting materials from landfills has accelerated dramatically since 2013. In fact, waste sent to landfills from pulp and paper mills was reduced 24 percent, as we coordinated a more consistent, disciplined, company-wide approach to defining, measuring and reporting byproduct streams.

Our goal is to reduce total solid waste sent to landfills 40 percent by 2020 from 2013 levels. How will we achieve this?

At Domtar, we aim to increase our supply of certified fiber by remaining committed to implementing and maintaining Chain-of-Custody certification to recognized third-party standards, namely the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®), Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®), and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification™ (PEFC™). While Domtar has a preference for FSC where available, we will continue to utilize fiber from multiple certification schemes.

In 2015, 73 percent of Domtar's electrical power requirements were met through cogeneration or on-site hydropower generation, providing environmental, cost and reliability benefits.

Due to the high share of biomass fuel and cogenerated electricity production in our pulp and paper manufacturing processes, Domtar's use of renewable energy is also significant. In 2015, 75 percent of the energy we used in our pulp and papermaking manufacturing processes came from renewable energy sources (this is net of 3% sold in renewable energy marketplaces).

On September 30th, 2016, Domtar sponsored FSC Friday, the annual event designed by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) to raise awareness about responsible forest management.

For over 20 years, FSC has worked to take care of forests and the people, plants, and animal species that depend on them. The FSC label gives assurance that wood, paper, and other forest products have been responsibly sourced from well-managed forests and/or recycled materials. FSC Friday is about sharing and promoting that message, so that our forests can remain forests for generations to come.
