As the baseball season nears its end, the Action Team national youth volunteer program's season is just getting underway. With the new school year beginning, the Action Team program hosted its first nationwide conference call for Captains and Ambassadors on October 12.

Joining high school student volunteers from around the country on the call was current major leaguer Hector Santiago.

Santiago, a left-handed pitcher for the Minnesota Twins, called in from Puerto Rico where he is actively lending a hand in hurricane relief efforts.

The Action Team national youth volunteer program will host its first teleconference of the 2017-18 school year on Thursday, October 12 (9:00 PM ET), when Hector Santiago of the Minnesota Twins joins Action Team Captains from Brunswick (ME) High School as special guests.

Once again, legendary broadcaster George Grande will host the conference call, which is open to all high school Action Team Captains, Ambassadors and adult Coordinators from across the country.

Now that Labor Day has come and gone, hundreds of Action Teams of student volunteers from high schools across the country are gearing up for another year of teaming with Major League baseball players and Volunteers of America to help train and inspire the next generation of volunteers.

Since the Action Team launched more than a decade ago, over 91,000 high school students have volunteered through the program to help more than 280,000 people in need.

Hundreds of high school students from Maine to Maui are helping Major League baseball players and Volunteers of America train and inspire the next generation of volunteers through the Action Team national youth volunteer program.  These teens – Action Team Captains – in turn, plan, organize and participate in volunteer activities of their choosing that support causes important to their individual communities.

On Wednesday April 26, the Action Team hosted its third and final national conference call of the school year. Once again, the Action Team’s very own “iron man” and longtime Cincinnati Reds broadcaster George Grande hosted the call – something he has done for every one of these calls since they began in 2009. Joining George was Chicago White Sox third baseman Todd Frazier, who was excited to be joining in the call to help celebrate National Volunteer Week, ( April 23-29.)

Action Team Ambassador Juan Salinas-Bentley didn’t derive nearly as much satisfaction from his baseball team’s 19-1 win over neighboring Palm Beach Lakes in February as he did from raising funds to help the financially stressed school pay the $1,485 for umpires it needed to complete this season.

It was recently announced that one of the Action Team’s national TV and radio public service announcement (PSA) campaigns -- titled ‘Are You In?’ -- established a new Goodwill Communications distribution record for national campaigns. 

Jake Peavy and Volunteers of America Upgrade Veterans Transitional Home

Jake Peavy led a team of volunteers who spent part of the weekend building out a community area at a transitional home for more than 30 formerly homeless veterans in Mobile, Ala., called Eagle’s Landing.

The service project brought together the Jake Peavy Foundation and Home Depot together with Volunteers of America Southeast, a local affiliate of the Players Trust’s national partner that operates the Eagles Landing facility and others like it across the country.
