Recently, another blogger at Just Means wrote a piece proposing pillars of a new Inspired Economy for the future. It's a great piece, throwing some light on dark economic times.

It also made me think about something new happening in the field of social enterprise: the creation of dedicated social enterprise campuses. A recent article in the Guardian highlighted a new company in Spain that is trying to build the world's first "<a href="...

As we bid adieu to 2008 and begin to peek into 2009, it is time to take stock of where we have been and make plans for where we'd like to be.

In many ways, 2008 was fantastic for social and environmental enterprises. More investors take this business model seriously and provide capital to take the good ideas to the next level. Another crop of entrepreneurs entered the space, bringing new ideas to the task of solving old problems. More importantly, there is a developing infrastructure to provide formal support and financing for these people who dare to think...

I was at a pretty cool conference last week – Wavelength 100. The attendees were half corporate, half social enterprise/entrepreneur. Lots of great chat, good organic food, and interesting ideas to pursue successful partnerships between the two groups.

One topic under discussion was that the terms ‘social enterprise’ and ‘social entrepreneur’ don’t necessarily do the movement any favors. These words are unknown, confusing, and don’t seem to fully represent who we are and what we do. Personally I find...

Recently I've found myself letting out an involuntary sigh whenever anyone says the words "social enterprise".

The fact that I keep sighing is a bit of a problem, as I aim to make a living out of social enterprise.

I like terms that say exactly what they do on the tin. The term social enterprise doesn't do that. I can't help but think that social enterprise is a term that has its roots in the days when we were all a bit uncomfortable with the idea of being in business, even if it was for a social purpose.

Social enterprise always makes me think of <a href="

Enterprise Rent-A-Car, likely the most customer-friendly in the industry, is positioning itself to make more money. How? By <a href=" Pamela Nicholson, who's worked her way up from the front-line ranks when the company was only 200 people over 27 years ago, to the role of President in this family-owned private company.

Does adding women leaders make companies more money? The research of, a non-profit based in New York, has consistently shown that the...

...may be in the works...for India. An article in today's Times of India details:

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), the statutory body that sets accounting and auditing standards for the corporate sector, is working on a new set of rules on CSR, making it a must for companies to report on social, environmental and economic initiatives.

"Broadly, the concept is to ensure that today's development and growth does not come at the cost of the future generation," ICAI secretary Ashok Haldia told TOI. Inspired by Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), a collaborating centre of the United Nations Environment Programme, ICAI has formed a committee to develop a framework for standardising the...
