When my generation was growing up, reading material barely had a pre-designed focus on environmental awareness. We were happy with Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton and copious amounts of 'Tell me Why' and 'Tell me How'. We grew up with a pretty decent view of the environment and a healthy respect for Nature which mostly stemmed from playing outside.

These were before the days of XBox, PSP and global warming. We learned about the world outside by playing in the dirt, bringing home stray...

Ottawa-based research firm Abacus Data says businesses should put more emphasis on finding and promoting green products. Yum! Brands recently released its CSR report to great skepticism on whether they actually do what they say on paper. One of the most glaring deficits of the report was the source of their meat and animal products. Following hot on the tails of speculation comes the news that an Alabama law firm is suing Taco Bell for false advertising. They say that they should stop using the terms  'seasoned ground beef" or "...

Raising meat for human consumption is one of the biggest anthropological reasons for global warming. The Worldwatch Institute actually puts this figure to 51% which means that even minor cutbacks in meat consumption will have far-reaching affects. A new study that has come out of the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology found that a direct tax on meat and meat products can act as a means of reigning in these emissions.

A tax of of €60/ton of CO2-equivalent would reduce greenhouse gas emissions from European agriculture by 7% and would also...

The question of what happens to company CSR when its brought over by a bigger brand is something that we have toyed with.  Many of the smaller, greener companies work on inbuilt principles of CSR which may or may not align when they get bought over by a bigger brand. Apart from creating a shift in consumer perception, brand image gets tainted.

This is something that organic chocolate manufacturer Green & Black's is struggling with. They were under the care of Cadbury until the company was brought over by Kraft. Now the team at Green &...

It is probably not surprising that smaller companies are lagging behind in their GHG emissions reporting which is a part of CSR reporting. According to the Carbon Disclosure Project's (CDP) 2010 S&P 500 Report, disclosure of GHG emissions by S&P 500 companies increased to 59% in 2010, and 54% of companies now include emissions data in their annual corporate reports.

A recent report entitled,  Risk and Opportunity in a Low-carbon Business Climate: Small & Mid-Caps & Climate Change, however shows that small and mid-sized companies have a long...
