(3BL Media and Just Means)-The Windy City is about to get windier. And hopefully, less reliant on fossil fuels.  IKEA recently announced their purchase of Hoopeston Wind, a wind farm of 49 wind turbines near Hoopeston in Vermilion County, two hours south of Chicago.  The purchase is the first wind power investment IKEA has made in the USA and their largest renewable energy project ever.  And, it will put them off the power grid in the US. This is huge news.

Hoopeston Wind Farm will be operational in 2015 and is part of their larger strategy to offset the company’s energy needs by 2020. The investment coincides with their plans...

(3BL Media/Justmeans) - The first-ever, crowdfunding campaign to take... not 10% of the project funding, not 5% of the project funding, not even a dollar to compensate for Paypal's fees...ZERO percent of the project funding--- has finally hit the market.  In case you didn't get that: Yes, they are giving 100% of their crowd-sourced funding to the projects. Their niche focus? Land conservation projects. The platform is called Natural Capital Network and its first project, Sawah Bali, is raising funds for 135 farmers in Bali in order to preserve their agricultural land from being turned into hotels and mansions....

(3BL Media and Justmeans)- An open vacation policy. Frisbee on the beach. Bowling outings. Volunteer days. Time to develop personal goals. And, oh yeah.  $500 a year to spend on professional development. No, this is not a piece about working for Google or Pixar. It’s a piece about intentional culture at Exygy, a 10-person, software design and build company based in San Francisco. One of Exygy’s software engineers, Justin Carboneau, deemed himself the ‘Chief Happiness Engineer.’ Of course, he is also a computer and technology wiz, as are the rest of his colleagues at Exygy. They have designed and built unique websites for clients like Google.org, the Skoll Foundation and Zendesk. But they are more...

(3BL Media and Justmeans)- For some reason, I’ve never thought about the impact of the hotel industry on the planet. My hotel stays are typically rushed and more about what I came to a particular town to accomplish than about lounging in the hotel pool or lobby. So, except for the moment when I decide to leave my towels on the floor or hang them up, understanding how or what it takes for hotel to operate responsibly has not been on the forefront of my sustainability research.

Until . . . I started thinking about water. According to the International Tourism Green Partnership, water...

(3BL Media and Just Means)- It's been several months since I've written anything about the fair trade movement, but that's not because things aren't happening. In fact, it's the 25th anniversary of fair trade! A lot of positive things have changed and from my refreshed perspective, the fair trade movement seems to be collaborating, perhaps finally finding more common ground. Perhaps.

Here’s the good news. Fair trade is doing its job- protecting small farmers despite unpredictable fluxes in the market. Coffee prices in 2013 plummeted to less than $1.10 per pound, a devastating and poverty-inducing price. According to the International Coffee...

(3BL and Just Means)- Spend joyfully. Spend justly. Spend less. Give more. These bold statements are the four, key precepts taught by The Boston Faith and Justice Network (BFJN) as part of what they call ‘economic discipleship.’  BFJN is equipping Christian communities in Boston to think critically about how they use one of their most powerful resources: their income. This call to Christian communities is in response to global poverty and issues of injustice around the world. By asking Christians to examine their consumption habits, BFJN hopes to challenge the way they think about spending and giving money.

“What we are seeing is a...

(3BL Media and Just Means)- “I would ask you, Julie, who are the seagulls in your life? How can you emulate the pelican behavior?" This was Beverly Winterscheid, the founding partner of Center for Nature and Leadership, and Leadership Development Professor in the Bard Sustainability MBA, talking and, as always, prodding.

Winterscheid is known to challenge people to go deeper and question assumptions. I had just explained to her how I had witnessed a group of pelicans peacefully roosting together on a dock along the Saint Augustine Intracoastal Waterway. A few seagulls began pecking at the pelicans,...

(3BL Media and Just Means)- In the middle of a conversation with film director Andrew Morgan, you suddenly find yourself standing on your feet, completely ready to radically change your lifestyle and consider the consequences of your consumption choices.  Ironically, I thought I had already considered my choices. My attitude going into this interview was just to tell the story of the upcoming film, True Cost, so that others would be moved to change. Wow, did I eat a big piece of humble pie.

“There are two paths given to people. One is incredibly funded and marketed, a world of access and consumption which denies the...
