Former Foster Youth Is Now Adoptive Mom

Imagine growing up in foster care and never being adopted. You start your life as an 18 year old on your own and build a family of your own. What’s the next step? For Nichole, it was adopting an older child from foster care to ensure that he had the love and support as an adult that she didn’t have.

Nichole and her husband met their son at a local boys’ home where they ran a volunteer program. He quickly became part of their family and they adopted him at age 16 in June of 2016. What makes their story extra special is that Nichole is a former foster child. She aged out of the system without the love and support of a forever family, but now has ensured that her son will have just that.

The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption supports private and public adoption agencies across the United States and Canada by providing funding to hire adoption recruiters. These recruiters are called Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiters and are trained by the Foundation in our child-focused Recruitment Model. The Foundation focuses on finding forever families for children most at risk of not being adopted, which includes older children, sibling groups and children with special needs. #ItsWorthIt
