The Life Science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, which operates as MilliporeSigma in the U.S. and Canada, is helping its employees give back while socially distancing and working remotely. Through virtual volunteer opportunities available on MilliporeSigma’s online SPARK™ portal, employees can dedicate their time, expertise and passion to a community organization.

The company’s Shared Business Services team in Bengaluru, India engaged 150 employees and their 50 children through a virtual volunteer opportunity. To spark curiosity, the team led five, at-home science experiments using common household materials. The activities ran during three time slots to accommodate employees working in various shifts.

The children had a great experience learning science concepts through simple experiments, while employees had a fun time with their families.

”The lockdown period was well-utilized to generate curiosity among children. It was motivating to hear kids asking for more activities,” said Mohan Bhaskara, associate manager, Creative Services, Shared Business Services, who organized the virtual event.
