New Barclays Study – Scale-up UK: Growing Businesses, Growing our Economy
Barclays has launched a new report on the future of business scale-ups in the UK. This is the culmination of a partnership, established in January last year, with the business schools of both the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge.
Barclays has worked with two of the world’s most eminent research teams in entrepreneurship, led by Professor Stelios Kavadias from the Cambridge Judge Business School and Professor Thomas Hellmann from Oxford’s Saïd Business School, on a project designed to effect fundamental change in the UK’s business mind-set and landscape. Both teams have carefully examined a range of issues, such as access to investor capital, debt and equity finance, the management and leadership skills required to grow and business mentoring opportunities to produce a report that will make a leading contribution to the debate on the future of business growth in this country.
The report, Scale-up UK: Growing Businesses, Growing our Economy, is being launched today by Barclays CEO, Jes Staley, alongside both Universities and the Chair of the Scale-up Institute, Sherry Coutu.
The Saïd and Judge Business Schools have each provided six individual recommendations designed to help the growth of UK businesses. Each recommendation consists of a number of interventions that can be found in the infographic above.
Commenting on the report’s publication, Jes said: “Barclays is proud to have worked with some of the world’s foremost experts in entrepreneurship from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge on this report. The challenges affecting business growth in the UK must be addressed for the sake of long-term economic growth and job creation and we want to lead the way, working with policy makers and business, in driving forward the recommendations outlined. The report is one step towards helping more businesses achieve their growth ambitions, but it is an important step and one that we look forward to building on.”
Following today’s launch, Barclays’ partnership with Oxford and Cambridge will continue the debate on the future of entrepreneurship at a roundtable on 11 May to discuss the report recommendations at the Saïd Business School, in conjunction with the Scale-up Institute. Beyond that, the report will be discussed with a wide range of policymakers and influencers across the UK, with a view to developing a clear roadmap for increasing the number of UK scale-ups.
