Amgen Scholars at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet (LMU) in Munich will engage in 10 weeks of intensive laboratory research. Up to 20 undergraduates will be exposed to cutting edge science in laboratories at LMU Munich's high-tech campus offering a unique academic and scientific life science environment with numerous renowned life science research institutions and world leading researchers.

Scholars will conduct mentor guided, hands-on research in the fields of biochemistry, cell, developmental, and molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, molecular medicine, neuroscience, computational neuroscience, cancer research, plant sciences and proteomics. Lectures and workshops offer insight into state-of-the art research topics, related issues such as bioethics, poster design, abstract writing and scientific career paths. The programme begins with an orientation retreat in the scenic Bavarian countryside, where scholars are introduced to LMU site staff, affiliated faculty and relevant research topics.

LMU Munich is one of the foremost research universities in Europe, with an over 500 year history. Excellence in research at LMU Munich is consistently recognized in national and international rankings. Fourteen Nobel Prize winners, including Conrad Roentgen, Werner Heisenberg, and most recently, Gerhard Ertl, are among the numerous LMU researchers who have received prestigious awards for groundbreaking work. Boasting the largest number of international students in Germany, LMU Munich actively promotes academic diversity and provides a rich environment for fostering international research partnerships and networks. The city of Munich also has much to offer, being cited by the New York Times as the "World's Most Liveable City" and Newsweek rating it as one of the "Ten Most Dynamic Cities" in the world. The third largest city in Germany and located within an hour's travel of the Bavarian Alps, Munich offers an exciting blend of high-tech industry and cosmopolitan life.
