Founded in 1877, the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) is the oldest national university in Japan. As Japan’s top and one of Asia’s most comprehensive research universities, UTokyo is committed to excellence in research and education as well as establishing a truly global campus with the aim of producing the next generation of leaders of the world.
The prime objective of the Amgen Scholars Program at UTokyo is to provide undergraduates who are committed to or who are considering a career in biology or related sciences, from different countries (including some from Japan), with biomedical research experience in the basic and translational sciences. Research projects which will provide these opportunities are submitted by faculty members belonging to the Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences and Institute of Industrial Science. By the end of their summer experience, students are expected to acquire knowledge and skills of conducting research, and are also expected to have been able to extend their international friendship through the collaborative experiences. We are sure that these experiences will help the students to develop future collaborations in many situations.
The three main campuses of UTokyo are located in and around the center of metropolitan Tokyo. The Amgen Scholars will be able to experience both the traditional and innovative atmosphere of one of the most active cities of the world but still be able to find peace and tranquility within the campuses away from the noise and bustle of the city.
