Business Sustainability: Not Just For the Big Companies

More businesses than ever are subscribing to the idea that they can save money, increase sales, and improve business value by implementing social and environmental business sustainability practices.  With countless examples of success stories making headlines every day, who is truly setting the mark?  More importantly: Which organizations should an aspiring business observe to be successful?

A recent GreenBiz post, The 10 Most Hopeful Green Business Stories of 2010, highlights some of the mega impact business actions from the past year.  While these remarkable successes over the past year prove to be insightful and inspiring, they may not offer a great deal of practical guidance to the larger majority of small to medium sized businesses.

Smaller company actions are arguably a more representative example of practical business sustainability.  Often challenged by the same financial pressures and resource constraints, small business applications offer practical insights and creative solutions to issues unseen in a corporate environment.

  • How will business sustainability implementation affect current operations and short-term cash flow?

  • Will desired business sustainability programs be self-financed or will investment dollars be available for capital improvements?

  • Will financing be available to make capital improvements?

  • Which resources could be leveraged with on-going business operations?

  • How will supply and value chain buy-in be attained from an underleveraged position?
