NAACP Recognizes Verizon's Commitment to Cultural Enrichment

Guest post by Howard Woolley, senior vice president, strategic alliances and wireless policy for Verizon.

There are times in my work here at Verizon when I have an opportunity to observe first-hand how our broadband technologies are making a difference in society.  I get to see how our company’s success is shared with the communities we serve.  Last week was such a time.

I had the honor of representing the company at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s 102nd Annual Convention.  During the final plenary session, Verizon was recognized for its three-year pledge of $1 million that has funded the development of two online learning programs – the NAACP Interactive Historical Timeline and the Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) student competition.

I encourage you to visit the NAACP Interactive Historical Timeline, click here.  Familiar and celebrated voices like actor Laurence Fishburne and Grey’s Anatomy star Chandra Wilson guide you through the story of the 102-year-old civil rights organization.

Not only will Verizon’s support allow the lessons of civil rights to endure, but the grants further our commitment to bring free educational resources to teachers, parents and students (check out Verizon Thinkfinity).

The online resources for the ACT-SO program and student competition, better known as the “Olympics of the mind,” are made available through Verizon Thinkfinity

Thinkfinity is at the core of Verizon’s educational mission.  The interactive platform provides tens of thousands of free resources developed by the most trusted names in education.  Teachers tell us that Thinkfinity provides a rich learning experience in the classroom.  Parents affirm that homework help is a breeze with Thinkfinity.  Content is easily searchable by grade level, keyword or subject to get that book report or science project done.

We know that Verizon’s technologies make cultural enrichment and online learning possible.  Our investment in the NAACP programs will expand educational opportunities for our youth and help them prepare for the challenges of the 21st Century, while reflecting on the lessons and achievements of some of our nation’s greatest leaders.
