World Environment Day

Jun 5, 2013 10:00 AM ET

Today we want to take the opportunity to draw attention to the World Environment Day, celebrated every year on June 5.

The United Nations Environment Programme's aim with this day is to raise global awareness of the need to take positive environmental action, which is something we couldn´t support more.

At H&M, our vision is clear. All our operations should be run in a way that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. Here are some of our latest initiatives and efforts within the environmental area helping us to move towards our vision.

Towards zero waste

We want to reduce, reuse or recycle wherever possible. Ultimately the vision is zero waste to landfills. That’s why our customers now can return old clothes to our stores around the world and give them a new life, instead of letting them go to waste. Items that are too worn and torn to be reused will be recycled and turned into raw materials and new products. Learn more about our garment collecting initiative.

No 1 user of organic cotton

Since 2010, H&M has been the biggest user of certified organic cotton worldwide. We have also been very actively involved in the Better Cotton Initiative. Now we have set the firm target that all our cotton should come from more sustainable sources by 2020 at the latest. Additionally, we will continue to increase the use of other conscious materials, like recycled polyester and wool. Read more about our journey towards 2020

Ground breaking water partnership

Water is a key resource for H&M and we are committed to ensure that water is used responsibly throughout our value chain. That's why we teamed up with conservation organisation WWF developing a new H&M water strategy together. It is a game changer in the fashion industry, as it takes the whole supply chain into account and goes far beyond the factory lines.
