SEATTLE, February 8, 2017 /3BL Media/ -- In honor of World Cancer Day, Feb. 4, Holland America Line is proud to announce that to date, the guests and employees of the company have raised more than $5 million for cancer support through "On Deck" programming that began in 2006. Currently the "On Deck" for a Cause program benefits six international cancer organizations located in the United States, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Continuing its longstanding commitment to SOS-Kinderdorf e.V. projects in 2017, AIDA Cruises has presented the children’s charity with a donation of 102,450 euros.

This year the proceeds from the New Year’s raffle that is traditionally held on board the AIDA fleet on December 31 will once again go to the SOS Children’s Village in Iloilo, Philippines and an SOS Children’s Village in Los Mina/Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

Maria Lucia is a single mother who works full time as a janitor in a hospital to support her 7-year-old daughter Bia. They live in a one-bedroom house in Bomba do Hemeterio, a low-income neighborhood in Recife, the sixth-largest metropolitan area in Brazil.

Before Habitat, their house was small and dark, with little ventilation and natural lighting. The roof was badly damaged from the rain, and the inside of the house was hot and moldy. Bia often had to miss school due to respiratory problems, a common affliction among children who grow up in these kinds of conditions.
