Timberland employees take advantage of the nice weather to lower their carbon footprint by biking to work during the CommuteSMART challenge. Though the bike rack gets more use during Bike to Work month, it is rarely empty, with several employees biking to work year-round.

Global outdoor lifestyle brand Timberland is driven by a longstanding commitment to protect and preserve the outdoors, around the world and in the communities where it operates. Putting these values into action, the Stratham, New Hampshire-based company recently joined its neighbors in the Seacoast Region’s annual CommuteSMART B2B (Business to Business) Challenge 2017. The event challenges area businesses to encourage employees to reduce their carbon footprint by using sustainable modes of transportation during the month of May. Employees at Timberland’s global headquarters embraced the opportunity, commuting by biking, carpooling, walking or telecommuting instead of driving alone in cars.

“This challenge provides a fun way for employees to connect with each other, learn who else rides their bike to work and what routes they take, or who might live nearby and could make a great carpooling buddy,” said Dan Grube, manager of digital solutions at Timberland. “Overall, it showed how passionate Timberland employees are about protecting the environment in any small way they can.”

National Bike Month is also celebrated in May, helping to drive further engagement in the CommuteSMART challenge. Timberland hosted an on-site bike tune-up event and provided a free breakfast for anyone who participated in Bike to Work Day on May 19.

In total, Timberland contributed to the more than 800 employees from a variety of companies in the Seacoast area who participated in the challenge. Participants traveled 212,438 sustainable miles and saved over 100 tons of CO2. To keep the momentum going, Timberland encouraged employees to join the upcoming CommuteSMART Club Summer Challenge.

While this event was intended to drive increased awareness and participation during the month of May, many Timberland employees choose to bike to work or carpool year-round. The Stratham headquarters offers an indoor bike-rack for parking during work hours, as well as prime parking spaces available only to carpoolers.
