Leadership for a Clean Energy Future: the Maine Model
From its long coastline to its vast forests, Maine’s natural environment is its primary financial asset, generating both commercial and recreational revenue. The Bangor Daily News sums up the admirable state of affordable clean energy in “the Pine Tree State” in an op-ed piece. The editorial gives credit to Senator Susan Collins for working in a bipartisan way as a strong advocate for the promotion of biomass, solar, and offshore wind technology. She has also led efforts to support the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Collins continues a legacy begun by former Maine Senator Edmund Muskie who worked for bipartisan passage of the Clean Air Act. Maine’s leadership in progressive environmental public policy for nearly 50 years defines a model of leadership that should be studied—and replicated.
