September 18, 2014 /3BL Media/ - Addison, a creative agency that does high-profile work for some of the world’s most respected institutions, is proud to be supporting New York City’s bill proposal to reduce the number of single-use plastic bags in circulation.

On average, New Yorkers use 5.2 million plastic bags per year, which requires an annual $10 million in City funds to transport to landfills. The goal of the proposed bill is to discourage unnecessary disposable bag use and reduce the number of single-use bags in circulation. Similar legislation has been very successful in other U.S. cities, such as Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles.

If the bill is passed, shoppers will be asked to pay 10¢ per plastic bag provided by New York City retailers to encourage shoppers to bring their own reusable bags and raise awareness about individual disposable bag use.

To help in these efforts, Addison has designed and commissioned a reusable bag made from recycled plastic bottles* for its staff, its clients and select City Council members. The bag is imprinted with facts about the importance of reducing plastic bag consumption to help protect the environment—“A plastic bag can take up to 1,000 years to decompose” and “This reusable bag has the life span of over 700 disposable plastic bags.”

Roger Byrom, CEO of Addison, said:

“We are proud to be supporting the proposed New York City plastic bag bill and strongly believe it will effectively reduce plastic bag waste and enhance the City’s environment.

“We designed and commissioned a reusable bag made from recycled plastic bottles to show our long-term commitment to reducing waste in New York City and protecting the wider environment.

“This is a hugely important issue, and we will continue to use our influence to help pass the bill."

New York City Council Member Margaret Chin (District 1-Manhattan), a co-prime sponsor of the plastic bag legislation, said:

“New Yorkers know we’re ready to tackle our city’s growing problem of wasteful disposable bag use, and that’s why my colleagues and I are moving this legislation forward.

“I thank Addison for their strong support of our bill, and for their work developing an innovative reusable bag that also displays a deep understanding of this important issue. With passionate allies on our side, I know we will make great strides in reducing New York City’s plastic bag waste and promoting the benefits of environmentally conscious alternatives.”
