WASHINGTON, August 16, 2022 /3BL Media/ - Following President Biden’s signature on the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), the leading authority for transforming health and well-being with its people-first approach to buildings, organizations and communities, issued the following statement from Rachel Hodgdon, IWBI President and CEO:

This afternoon, President Biden signed into law historic legislation that will shape the very course of our climate future, while also creating enormous opportunities for healthy buildings, jobs, equity and resilience.

On behalf of IWBI, I commend and applaud the President and Congress for their resolve and tireless work to get this legislation done. For the first time, the country has set a course to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030. By making the largest climate investment in our history – to the tune of $369 billion – this bill is poised to fuel climate innovation unlike we’ve ever seen and deploy solutions that will reverberate across the country and around the world. This is what climate leadership looks like — taking bold, definitive action to unleash American ingenuity and catapult us into a global leadership position.

Make no mistake. This is landmark legislation critical for planetary health and human health. We know climate change is the defining public health challenge of our time. Every day and all around the world, we have seen the tragic and devastating health impacts caused by an already changing climate, including raging wildfires, catastrophic floods, extreme heat, dangerous levels of air pollution and the increased likelihood of more disease. With this bill, we are not only taking a huge step forward to advance clean energy and energy efficiency, but also to improve health, bolster health resilience and make equity and climate justice central to how we deploy these strategic investments.

I am profoundly grateful that, in these fraught times, our political leaders put people first by seizing this remarkable and rare opportunity to ensure we are building a stronger, healthier and safer future for all. We stand ready, alongside our community of hundreds of thousands of WELL professionals, advocates and practitioners, to roll up our sleeves and begin the hard work of translating this legislation to action.
