FISHERS, Ind., October 25, 2022 /3BL Media/ - Land Betterment Corporation (“Land Betterment” or the “Company”), an environmental solutions company fostering positive impact through upcycling former coal mining sites to create sustainable community development and job creation, is excited to discuss its progress in transforming the property of a former coal loadout facility located in Pike County, Kentucky into an ecological housing community.

The original plan for Phase I of ekō Village of Pike was to include up to 13 homes. There are now 14 ekō Solutions upcycled shipping container-based homes in the ekō Village of Pike. Once these homes are connected to utilities, which is currently in process, residents will be able to live in these newly manufactured, sustainable and upscale homes. Additionally and because of strong market demands, Land Betterment has added a Phase ll development plan, which will include 10 additional homes, taking ekō Village of Pike to a total of 24 homes with a variety of ekō Solutions models and designs.

During 2020, Land Betterment took control of this abandoned former industrial site which was once utilized by the coal industry. After working with the local community to better understand their needs, Land Betterment remediated the land with the vision of offering residents a sustainable, high-end, cost-effective and luxury container-based home designed to bring a new, more efficient and safer housing option to the eastern Kentucky region. ekō Villages aims to support this dynamic transitioning economy, with a focus on innovation, agriculture and industrial parks with nearby employment opportunities.

Land Betterment’s President, Kirk Taylor commented, “The goal of ekō is to not only provide a real upscale housing solution at a good price, but also to have a positive impact on the overall community and region. This site is a great location in a residential area of the region, right outside of Pikeville, Kentucky that was once a coal loadout facility. By remediating the land we can remove this blight from the region and build our upscale homes for future members of the community while also improving the community’s quality of life.” Kirk continued, “We truly believe our experience in the region and access to land will enable us to drive entrepreneurship, innovation and efficiency in this part of America that is too often overlooked and underserved. Our solutions are practical, achievable, and aim to build a new, sustainable ecosystem for this part of the country.”

Land Betterment’s Executive Chairman, Mark Jensen added, “This is proof of concept that we can provide a new, innovative and economical housing option to the current housing stock in the region, with upscale modern amenities that are also ecological, sustainable and extremely durable and safe. We have been working and collaborating with the local communities to get to this point, and we are extremely excited to now be delivering our ekō homes to the region. Our ekō Villages are bringing real, sustainable, environmental and social solutions to a region in need while raising the standard of living. ekō Villages are safe, flat, spacious, and well located and provide local residents with their own personal and safe living space at an affordable price.”
