HOUSTON and CHARLESTON, S.C., Feb. 21, 2013 / 3BL Media /PRNewswire/ -- CITGO Petroleum Corporation and local CITGO Marketer Southern Gas and Fuels have recognized Southern Sustainable Resources as one of its latest Fueling Good winners. The award will help fuel the vehicles that Southern Sustainable Resources uses in its Zero Waste Program, an initiative that educates the public about the environmental benefits of recycling and composting, while collecting food waste that can be used by local farmers. The gift cards will also fund the pick-up of materials in the eCycling Project, which encourages proper disposal of electronic waste and provides collection, refurbishment, recycling and donation services to the local communities.

"We are very grateful to CITGO and Southern Gas and Fuels for their generous award to our organization," said Michael Pectol, co-founder and chief operating officer for Southern Sustainable Resources. "CITGO has helped us expand our eCycling Project so that we can collect a larger volume of unwanted or unused e-waste to be recycled or donated. We can also transport more processed food waste to local farmers who use the food for animal feed. With these gift cards, we look forward to broadening these services in the upcoming year, thanks to CITGO."

Since 2008, Southern Sustainable Resources has partnered with local and regional businesses, municipalities and other non-governmental organizations to help reduce their ecological footprint through the development of renewable forms of energy, waste mitigation and through the use of sustainable design and development. In addition to implementing methods of conservation, Southern Sustainable Resources provides education, community action and research. These programs are designed to teach people simple changes in behavior that help create a sustainable use of natural resources.

"The vital services that Southern Sustainable Resources provides to our community not only help protect our environment, but also support the economy by aiding local farmers," said Mike Kocak, president of Southern Gas and Fuels. "We are proud to join CITGO in supporting such a deserving organization."

Over the past four years, CITGO has donated more than a million miles of good to more than 200 local heroes and non-profit organizations through its Fueling Good program. In the latest campaign, an all-time record of more than 300,000 votes were cast to determine the 12 winning 501(c)(3) organizations.
