Living Product Prize will Encourage Development of Products that Work in Harmony with Nature
March 2, 2016 /3BL Media/ - Can we design products that function as elegantly as anything found in the natural world? And can those products mimic nature’s design principles? That is the goal of the Living Product Prize, a new initiative of the Biomimicry Global Design Challenge, an annual team competition from the Biomimicry Institute that focuses on accelerating the development of nature-inspired solutions to critical sustainability issues.
Biophilia. There’s your answer. A method of design in which the connection between humans and the environment is embraced and enhanced, rather than fought against.
I was six years old, so you’ll have to forgive the fact that I can’t name them all off the top of my head. But I’ve definitely heard of them. That isn’t remarkable though, given that (1) I’m a big basketball fan and (2) EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN HAS HEARD OF THESE PEOPLE. Sorry, that was the six-year-old in me typing.
Despite our best efforts, separating ourselves from nature is a fruitless endeavor. So long as we are made primarily of carbon, we are nature. So long as we breath in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, we are nature.
As I sit down to write this post, I think my mood can be described best by the following: feeling a temptation towards philosophical musings of the sort that would come naturally to you if we were sipping Earl Grey tea surrounded by many leather bound books. And here we go….
Biomimicry Global Design Challenge 2015 Names Finalists. New Challenge Opens Hundreds of innovators from around the world engaged in the 2015 Biomimicry Global Design Challenge (BGDC) to improve our global food system by looking to nature for design solutions. Eight finalist team were announced September 30 before traveling to Austin, TX for a special Biomimicry Conference at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center on October 4.

Finalists announced for the world’s first food system focused biomimicry innovation accelerator
September 30, 2015 /3BL Media/ - Earlier this year, hundreds of people from around the world took on a challenge to fix our global food system by looking to nature for design solutions. Now, eight finalist teams have been invited to prototype their solutions in an accelerator program that will award $100,000 to the top contender in an effort to increase speed to market for biomimetic solutions to global problems.
