BNSF Railway Company (BNSF) recently announced more details about the major capital projects it plans to complete in 2015 to maintain and grow its rail network.
About 350 riders boarded BNSF Railway’s Holiday Express passenger train at Springfield, Mo., on Dec. 3, as the annual train trip, a tribute to families of the U.S. military, got underway. Other stops included Jonesboro, Ark., on Dec. 4, Memphis on Dec. 5, Amory, Miss., on Dec. 6, and the final stop at Birmingham, Ala., on Dec. 7.

BNSF Railway recently announced that its planned capital expenditures for 2015 will be $6 billion, which will go toward maintenance and expansion of the railroad in order to meet the expected demand for freight rail service. The 2015 plan marks the third year in a row that BNSF has committed a record amount for capital investments. BNSF also updated its planned capital expenditures for 2014, which now are expected to be $5.5 billion.

The 2013-2014 winter was one of the most severe winters the United States has experienced in decades with extreme temperatures that persisted for long periods and created special challenges for operating the railroad.
The USS Iowa was an important U.S. Navy battleship during World War II. Now docked at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, Calif., the retired warship is a museum open to the public. Earlier this year, the Navy donated 150 16-by-50-inch caliber projectiles to the museum. Although the projectiles are inert, transporting them was a challenge due to the large size and quantity.
The Downtown Topeka Inc. project to revitalize South Kansas Avenue in downtown Topeka, Kan., recently received a boost from the BNSF Railway Foundation.
Andy Williams, regional director, Public Affairs, presented the first check, which will be used to beautify South Kansas Avenue. The total donation will be paid over a three-year period. BNSF and the seven other sponsor companies will have input into amenities, pocket parks and other aesthetic improvements in the downtown Topeka area.
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) recently announced the 2014 recipient of the Holden-Proefrock Award is BNSF Railway’s Director of Hazardous Materials Ed Chapman. The award is presented annually to a person associated with the railroad industry who has made significant contributions to hazmat transportation safety throughout their career.
CivilianJobs.com announced the winners of the Most Valuable Employers (MVE) for Military earlier this month. BNSF Railway is again a winner and has made the list each year since the recognition began in 2009.
