Who me, biased? Yes, you. Well not just you, all of us.

Most of you are probably thinking – I am the exception. I know I thought that when I first heard this. However, through my role as a diversity leader I have been challenged to think about equality and diversity differently, to seek out the latest research on what drives inequalities in our company, our industry and society.

Today, only 26 women lead Fortune 500 companies and just 17 percent of all board members are women. Compound this with the fact that a mere 28 percent of those firms have only one female director. And there has been minimal improvement in the gender wage gap, with men still earning 22 percent more than women in equivalent positions.

In her plenary address at the BSR Conference 2013, former President of Ireland Mary Robinson used the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. to describe the climate challenge. She called it “the fierce urgency of now.” 

“We are running out of time on this issue,” she said. “We all have to do much more than we have been doing.”
