#DardenDigest: 5 Things You Shouldn’t Be Throwing Away

Blog

The Darden Green Team, our group of self-selected employees who are passionate stewards and advocates of the environment, hosted a successful “Dispose-All Day” last week and with more than two tons of waste collected. The Green Team, which leads the everyday sustainability efforts for our employees, encouraged co-workers to reduce waste and reuse or recycle throughout our Restaurant Support Center (RSC). Then with Darden’s help they take it a step further and allow employees to continue these practices with items from their home at quarterly Dispose-All Day events.

#DardenDigest: Working Together in the Face of Natural Disasters

Blog

As is the case with all natural disasters, when a series of powerful tornadoes ripped through the Midwest, the American Red Cross was there to help. On November 17, severe storms and more than 50 tornadoes impacted Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky. These devastating storms, including two extremely powerful tornadoes, destroyed or damaged thousands of homes, closed roads and left more than 750,000 residents without power.

#DardenDigest: Culinary Training for Culinary Educators

Blog

Attending the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) ProStart Summer Institutes has been an amazing opportunity for me. I had the chance to attend two separate weeks of training through the program, and last year I was thankful to be sponsored by Darden Restaurants. These experiences have given me much more confidence and real-life examples to help my students learn how to become culinary professionals. I am not a trained chef, but I am a high school teacher who is teaching future chefs.

#DardenDigest: Being a Good Community Neighbor during the Holidays

All year, our more than 2,000 restaurants are active in their communities through partnerships with the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity International, area food banks and many others. We see our restaurants as citizens of the communities they serve, and we empower our employees to get involved and make a difference in their communities.

#DardenDigest: 2013 Citizenship Update

Blog

Even as Darden Restaurants faced challenging business conditions in FY2013, our company’s commitment to being a reliable, solutions-oriented corporate citizen remained strong. Indeed, we are more convinced than ever that the investments we make in citizenship today are integral to our continued success tomorrow. That’s because we are operating in a New Era for our industry and for business generally, one characterized by increased expectations among guests, employees and other stakeholders. And one of the areas where we see these heightened expectations is citizenship.

Recently, we had the opportunity to speak with Rio Farms’ and Gills Onions’ Director of Sustainability Nikki Rodoni.

Darden Digest: The Spirit of Giving

Blog

I’m a pushover for a great quote. I have quote envy for folks who can create emotion and inspire with just a handful of carefully selected words or the perfect turn of phrase. Man, I wish I was that good! For now, I just Bogart the really good ones, whip out the dry erase marker and scribble them on the mirrors around the house, hopeful the deeper meaning of life sinks in with the family. November 15 was National Philanthropy Day, which celebrates all things philanthropic and kicks off our Restaurant Community Grants program.

Darden Digest: Reducing Confusion and Cost for Tomorrow’s Seafood Consumers

Blog

I love seafood. In fact, this past weekend I enjoyed some fresh-caught, grilled snapper and later some sautéed shrimp. And I know I wasn’t the only one - the appetite for seafood is increasing around the world. Due to a growing population and a rapidly rising middle class, the demand for seafood is expected to increase by more than 100 metric tons by 2030, an increase of 75% from today’s production. As demand grows, there will be increased pressure on the seafood supply chain.
