Whirlpool Corporation announced earlier this month that 2019 is the 50th anniversary of its sustainability commitment. As far back as 1969, the company’s CEO talked about how programs to reduce Whirlpool’s impact on the environment had already proven to be a smart investment in the company’s future.
We caught up with Whirlpool’s global sustainability director, Ron Voglewede, to get his take on how sustainability has evolved over the last five decades.
PepsiCo has launched an initiative to promote recycling across Latin America and the Caribbean. The company will use consumer incentives and a rewards program in the hopes of increasing recycling; the program, “Recycling with a Purpose,” will be expanded to 10 countries in Latin America over the next two years, the company says.
HP Inc. says that sustainable impact was a key differentiator for more than $700 million in new business last year. The company’s newly published 2017 Sustainable Impact Report shows a 38% year-over-year increase in sales bids with sustainability requirements.
“In 2017, customers with sustainable purchasing criteria — including criteria related to eco-labels — represented a total of approximately $15.8 billion of existing and potential business revenue,” the report says.
In a first in the US, a company has entered into a syndicated sustainability-linked revolving loan. CMS Energy and its subsidiary, Consumers Energy, have entered into $1.4 billion revolving credit facilities from Barclays, the sole Sustainability Structuring Agent on the loan. This means that CMS can reduce its interest rate on the new credit by meeting targets related to environmental responsibility, CMS says.
