On March 29, Prudential Financial, Inc. proudly announced its $5 million investment in Living Cities’ newly launched Blended Catalyst Fund, a $31 million impact investing debt fund that will test innovative approaches to solving urban problems. The Blended Catalyst Fund combines philanthropic and commercial debt under the premise that both types of capital are needed to support initiatives that achieve better results for low-income people in US cities.

As I stood in front of my booth at the Net Impact Conference Expo, I watched eager MBA students stride between tables. These aren’t your typical MBA students. They’re not interested in climbing the corporate ladder or the highest-paying careers. These MBAs want to use their degrees to create a better world.
The concept of impact investing has just received a big boost. BlackRock, the leading global money manager, has launched the BlackRock Impact U.S. Equity Fund. While the amount of the fund, $20 million, is a fraction of the $4.7 trillion that the firm manages, its symbolism is much larger, reports The Economist. It’s a strong vote of confidence in the idea of putting money into companies that are advancing social good while making a profit.
