LORDSTOWN, Ohio, July 8, 2013 /3BL Media/ – General Motors Lordstown assembly and stamping complex, where the Chevrolet Cruze is built, is switching to LED lighting with a built-in, fully integrated wireless control system, GM’s largest such conversion in North America.

The project goal was to replace the existing 40-foot high bay lighting system in the stamping plant with one that provided the same brightness and illumination yet costs less money, consumes less energy and requires less maintenance.

GM’s Lordstown Stamping plant is the first and largest North American GM facility to convert all of its lighting to high-efficiency LED bulbs. The switch will save the plant more than $800,000 overall annually, while reducing CO2 emissions by more than 8,500 tons. This is equivalent to annual energy use of 397 homes.

How many people does it take to replace a light bulb with LED?

“Practically none,” says Kevin Krohner, managing director of iOS Light, a provider of LED lighting solutions.

“When companies want to go change light bulbs, they have to send two people at least,” says Krohner. “They need one person to climb up there on the ladder and the other person to watch. So they're paying 20-to-30 dollars to change a light bulb.”
