The future is fast upon us as the stuff of science fiction becomes our daily lives. Technology has evolved at a speed none could have predicted. Smart phones, tablets, autonomous vehicles, drones, Bitcoin, bots, Alexa…the rise of Big Tech, and the advent of AI. There is virtually no part of daily life on Earth that has not yet been hit by the sonic waves of the tech boom. How we live, connect, learn, transact, identify, express, sustain, and find our way has all changed in the blink of an eye.
The intersection of business and values has been the site of several collisions lately—some accidental, some accidents waiting to happen.
While the subjects in question have varied from CEO activism and governance to issues of ethics and data privacy, the end point is the same: In business 2018, values matter, more than ever. No company looking to its future viability can afford to avoid making choices—and statements—about what it stands for while avoiding pitfalls and misguided actions.
For the second year in a row, National Geographic aired a global live broadcast of the Breakthrough Prize ceremony, an annual awards show that aims to give scientists and mathematicians the same celebrity treatment as actors and musicians. Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman hosted the December 4 ceremony, which also included appearances by Jeremy Irons, astronaut Scott Kelly, Sienna Miller, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vin Diesel, Kevin Durant, Dev Patel, Alex Rodriguez, and Will.i.am, as well as a musical performance by Alicia Keys.
You know what’s fun? Reminiscing about old, iconic commercials is fun. You’ve got your “Beef, It’s What’s for Dinner,” the California Raisins dancing across your screen, and some excessively persistent kid giving a limping and clearly frustrated “Mean Joe” Greene of the Pittsburgh Steelers a Coca-Cola in exchange for his sweaty, disgusting football jersey. Ahhhhhhhh, good times.
On Sunday, Nov. 29, at 7/6c, FOX will air a one-hour special on the 2015 Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, an annual awards show honoring the work of today's leading scientists and mathematicians. The ceremony, hosted by Family Guy creator and Cosmos executive producer Seth MacFarlane at NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, originally aired live on 21st Century Fox's National Geographic Channel on Nov. 8.
Continuing their joint work promoting science, technology, engineering, and math, 21st Century Fox's National Geographic Channel and FOX have agreed to broadcast this year's Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, an awards show honoring the world's most prominent scientists and mathematicians. Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy and executive producer of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, will host the ceremony for the second year in a row. Nat Geo will broadcast the event live on Sunday, November 8, with a one-hour version scheduled to air on FOX on November 29.
