Company introduces 2025 goals that align with SDGs
As we enter into the last year of our five-year performance cycle, we’re already thinking about what 2025 might look like.
Our sustainability journey began in earnest back in 2008 when we became a signatory to the UN Global Compact. The Compact had us focusing on four broad topics as a means to improve society: human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. To deliver in these areas, we set goals and targets that were most applicable to the difference we could make with our business. Since that time, we’ve accomplished a great deal.
Driving down a nondescript industrial road in Austin, Minn., you might find yourself slowing down to admire a striking building with a facade of glass and red panels. Backing onto Wolf Creek and a forest of white oak and ironwood trees, it would be easy to mistake the building for a high-end architectural firm. Instead, this is the new multimillion dollar, 52,000-square-foot research and development laboratory of Hormel Foods.
Reaching an ambitious packaging reduction goal: 25 million pounds by the year 2020

The mind-bending complexity of how food is packaged is something most consumers don’t pay much attention to. Consider the fact that there are over 11,000 distinct materials used to package Hormel Foods products. Figuring out exactly how to make those materials maximally efficient and sustainable falls to an elite group with an ambitious goal: In 2012, the packaging development team was challenged to reduce total packaging material by 25 million pounds by the year 2020. With only a year to go, the team’s job is getting more difficult.

As part of our brand-new employee spotlight series, we’re sitting down with Fabien Thibault, global manager of product and packaging sustainability at MilliporeSigma — the Life Science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany — to learn more about the work he’s doing to move the needle.
1. How did you get your start with MilliporeSigma?
I started with MilliporeSigma in 2005 as a packaging engineer in the business field, which later became BioMonitoring. In this role, I oversaw the development of packaging for new products.
