Freeport-McMoRan’s Pollinator Conservation Initiative Enhances Pollinator Habitats and Provides Pollinator Protection Education

Since 2011, Freeport-McMoRan’s Pollinator Conservation Initiative has sought to increase the habitat for pollinators and to provide learners of all ages with opportunities to engage with topics in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Today, more than a dozen Freeport-McMoRan operations in North America have implemented pollinator conservation and education projects both on and off company property.

These programs have been recognized through the Wildlife Habitat Council’s (WHC) Conservation Certification program.

December 8, 2017 - The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) announced their 2017 WHC Award winners on November 9. WHC honors programs and projects that demonstrate excellence in the areas of wildlife habitat enhancement and restoration, and conservation education.

Freeport-McMoRan has been a member of the WHC for many years and currently has 15 operating sites/facilities that are WHC certified at the gold level.

On International Mother Earth Day, we are reminded that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance. We are dependent on even the smallest of creatures such as butterflies, wasps, and flies – and particularly bees, to pollinate the crops which provide us with a third of all our food, and a world without them would be devastating. Bees also play an important role in Goldcorp’s reclamation process, as they are able to pollinate and improve our replanting efforts.

Climax Mine, a Freeport-McMoRan Company, Recycles Biosolids for Land Reclamation

Since 1997, Climax operations has helped local communities recycle waste by converting the biosolids from their wastewater treatment plants into compost to reclaim and revegetate lands used in past mining activities. Biosolids are trucked in, piled, mixed with wood chips, aerated, turned, blended, tested and rested for about 18 months until the material is nutrient-rich and pathogen-free. The compost is not used only for reclamation at Climax, but also is provided to the state of Colorado to reclaim and restore abandoned mine sites.

Freeport-McMoRan’s Henderson Mine Receives Colorado Parks and Wildlife Partners in the Outdoors Award

Urad Lake is part of a reservoir system in Woods Creek Valley that through the decades has been a fresh water source for mining and municipal use, as well as a productive fishery.

Water is Life - Clean Water and Concurrent Reclamation at Marlin Mine
