Attending the 2016 Japan Amgen Scholar Symposium

Guest post written by The University of Tokyo Amgen Scholar Alex Sample
Blog

The Amgen Scholar Japan Symposium was a global gathering of passionate young scientists. The Amgen Scholars Japan Program is the only one of Scholar’s three programs to accept applications from any country which leads to a very diverse group; this year 48 Scholars from 17 countries participated. This year, Kyoto University hosted the symposium, so naturally the best way to show the Tokyo Scholars the city was with a visit to one of Kyoto’s many shrines—in this case Fushimi Inari Taishita.

Harvard University Faculty Mentor David Mooney on Luck in Mentorship

Blog

Any Amgen Scholar would be fortunate to land in David Mooney’s cell and tissue engineering lab at Harvard University. In the past year alone, his team of 40 scientists -- 10 of them undergraduates -- has packaged cancer vaccines into new scaffold-like materials. They’ve made elastic gels on which bone stem cells stand a better chance of survival.  And they have developed strands of nanomaterials that can deliver drug “refills” to existing drug-eluting implants.

Guest post written by Caltech Amgen Scholar Isabelle Rosenthal

As we clambered out of the bus, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Amgen Symposium which was taking place over the next few days. I had already spent the previous four weeks as an Amgen Scholar at Caltech getting to know my compatriots there, but this was new territory on another campus and with every Amgen Scholar in the country.
